In 1996, Dongxing became a county-level city. In 2012, the city administers 10 communities in 31 villages and 3 communities, with a land border of 39 kilometers, a coastline of 50 kilometers and a regional area of 590 square kilometers. Dongxing has the Beilun Estuary Mangrove Reserve, one of the three major mangrove demonstration reserves in the world.
